WATER SKIING
In 1922, eighteen year old Ralph Samuelson made an inaugural ride on a pair of 8-foot softened planks he called "skis". Not long after, water skiing officially developed into a competitive sport and in 1939 the first ever National Water Ski Championships were held on Long Island, New York.
Demonstrating the sports powerful athleticism and crowd appeal, waterskiing became an Olympic exhibition sport in 1972, which was followed by a rapid growth in popularity. Today, there are 48 international waterskiing federations that promote both recreational and competitive skiing. 
Thousands of local, regional and national tournaments for skiers of all levels are held annually.
